Is EMS Right for Me?

When thinking about a career as an EMT or Paramedic there are a few things you need to think about.  Ask yourself the following questions to determine if this is the correct path for you:

Do you like to help people?

The main function of an EMT or Paramedic is helping others in need.

Are you physically fit?

You don’t have to be a body builder, but you will be running up stairs with bags of equipment, and lifting patients.  You also need to see colors and hear well.  That’s why we require a physical before you enroll.  You may also need a few shots…(sorry!)

Do you have personal integrity?

Guardian College students are expected to follow a Code of Conduct that prohibits behaviors that, in the workplace, would tend to get someone sued or fired.  Being able to follow rules is essential to the profession.

Can you pass a background check?

Many hospitals and ambulance services will not allow persons with a criminal record to provide patient care.  Check with our clinical coordinator for a confidential review if you have any doubt about passing a background check.

Can you stand the sight of blood and needles?

Most people can get over this if they have a mild aversion.

Do you have a high school diploma or GED?

In order to get into a program, you must be able to verify you graduated from high school or have a GED certificate.

Are you a good driver?

Of course, you don’t need to drive to take one of our classes.  But you will need a valid license to get a job in EMS.

Do you like to work outdoors?

A majority of EMT and Paramedic work is done outdoors.

Are you legally allowed to work in the US?

In order to be hired for a position, you will have to prove you are legally allowed to work in the US.

If you fit all the above characteristics, be sure to check out our class offerings.
